The Mayan Calendar and it's 2012 End Date Part I

A recent cable TV program called "The Mayan Doomsday Calendar" brought up some interesting information that I hadn't heard before about the Calendar, so I did a Google search using keywords from the show and came up with a number of informative websites that helped me to better understand the intricacies of the Mayan Calendar. The best ones I have posted at the bottom of the article so you can do some research on your own, if you are so inclined.

Here is a summary of what I found, along with some interesting coincidences.

The Structure of the Mayan Calendar

The Mayan Calendar is actually 3 calendars in one. The first two are together called the Short Count. They are made up of the Haab, the civil calendar of 365 days, and the Tzolkin, a divine calendar of 260 days. The third calendar is called the Long Count, which is a count of the days since the start of the Mayan era.

The Mayans also had names for periods of time longer than most calendar systems even address, such as 1 pictun = 7885 years, 1 calabtun = 158,000 years, 1 kinchiltun = 3 million years, and 1 alautun = 63 million years. Remember this Alautun as it will make frightening sense shortly.

In the Mayan creation myth they say that the creator, known as the First Father, was tricked by evil gods into the "dark rift" at the center of the Milky Way to compete with them in a Mayan game of ball. Once they lured him there they killed him by cutting off his head. Later his twin sons fought them in another game of ball and won and so were able to bring the First Father back to life. They then went on to create Mankind.

Our sun, due to precession, will appear to be moving across the center of the Milky Way galaxy and this "dark rift" in 2012. Looking for an astronomical tie-in with this astrological event we looked to see if the solar system was physically going to pass through the galactic plane or one of the spiral arms of our galaxy. The increased density of matter as well as the increase in cosmic radiation caused by these events could have catastrophic results.

It turns out that we are north of the galactic plane heading away from it, having passed through it approximately 3 million years ago. We are headed towards the Perseus arm of our galaxy but at the speed we are moving, 1 light year every 1,400 years and a distance of 6,500 light years away we won't reach it for another 9,100,000 years. So our position in the galaxy does not appear to be an eminent threat, even though there was found a massive correlation between the times that we pass through a galactic arm to past mass extinction events about every 100 million years. We also examined the theoretical discussions of a galactic pressure wave making its way through the galaxy but it does not coincide with our near future.

Besides this astrological conjunction the end of the Mayan calendar coincides with a number of major celestial events. On Dec 21, 2012 there will be a transit of Venus1, it is the date of the Winter Solstice2, it is the end of the precession cycle3 of the alignment of the Earth, and it is the date that the sun will align with the center of the Milky Way4. If you need any further descriptions of these terms please read the Terms list at the end of this article.

So this date was not picked by accident and the frightening thing about it is that 63 million years ago, or exactly 1 Alautun, coincides with the extinction of the dinosaurs in the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction, not to mention every other animal species larger than a loaf of bread.

So the Mayan calendar is not just a calendar, it is a warning. Somehow they knew what had happened before and they built their calandar system around this end time to tip future Mankind off. In fact, they believed there have been 4 extinction cycles in the history of the planet already with the 5th one just around the corner.

We recently uncovered references stating that the Mayans feared the Sun, saying that they thought it caused the end time disasters. We found opposing opinions as to whether it was from too much solar radiation (solar flares) or too little (ice age). We will research this further!

We also noticed an interesting correlation with the Mayan Calendar of 5,113 years called a Baktun. Take 2012 years off that and you would have a date of 3,101 BC, and it just so happens that the last magnetic pole reversal was around 3,100 BC!

Terms:

1. The transit of Venus refers to Venus crossing the face of the Sun, in other words the Earth and Venus are in alignment with the Sun.

2. The Winter Solstice is the date of the shortest day of the year.

3. The precession cycle refers to the wobble in the Earth's alignment. The Earth's axis is not straight vertical but is tilted at 23.5 degrees. This axis rotates, or precesses, once ever 26,000 years and is seen from the earth as the axis moving around the North Star.

4. The sun, due to precession, appears to be moving across the center of the Milky Way galaxy in the sky. On 2012 it will be directly over the galactic bulge.
