For the first time in its 19-year history, the New World Symphony will transmit a full-orchestra performance live over both the commercial Internet and Internet2, Sunday, 29 April, 2007, 4:30 PM U.S. EDT. Michael Tilson Thomas, artistic director, will introduce and conduct Stravinsky's Pétrouchka in front of a live audience of 700 at the Lincoln Theatre, New World Symphony's home in Miami Beach, Florida. Originally written for the Ballet Russes in 1911, Pétrouchka is a masterpiece of 20th-century orchestral repertoire. The music depicts the adventures of a straw puppet that comes to life, similar to the beloved story of Pinocchio. The performance will be simultaneously transmitted live over the Internet. The links will be available at the New World Symphony's website, www.nws.edu, and the show is expected to run 37 minutes. The webcast, available on RealPlayer and Windows Media for commercial Internet users, will provide a complete view of the conductor and orchestra paired with high-quality audio. Locations connected to the Internet2 network or its international partner networks can access the webcast in multi-cast format at greater bandwidth, providing higher video and audio quality. The NWS website will contain program notes, a performers' blog, and more information about the New World Symphony. Multicast Addresses

April 20, 2004 - Today the University of South Florida's College of Visual and Performing Arts facultys' original compositions were heard by scientists and researchers at a national meeting of over 200 Carnegie Research Comprehensive universities. Using multicast uncompressed audio technology streaming at 1.44 Mbit/second, CD quality audio was sent flawlessly from the Tampa campus to the conference site and to international sites linked by the very high speed network. The software, developed at the College of Visual and Performing Arts with the assistance of Internet2 project staff at USF, is the basis of an online repository of 10,000 American Jazz albums from the early 20th century. Students and faculty throughout the world will soon be able to access this precious cultural resource from their Internet2 universities. The website to access USF's multicast and unicast streaming jazz is http://tunes.cvpa.usf.edu:7070.

Our recent Internet 2 DVTS broadcast on April 8th was a smashing success. With the assistance of Educational Outreach a 2 way video connection was established using Polycom boxes between USF and U of Washington. Two Instructors on their end watched and critiqued performances by students of Sheila Woodward's graduate student teachers here at USF, followed by a round of questions about teaching music education. The whole event was broadcast live on an Internet 2 multicast which anyone with DVTS software installed and an I2 connection could watch. Telesurgery with Gibabit Network between Korea and Japan over NGI link to NGI Aim: Transmission of high quality moving-image is essential for telemedicine, which needs standardization of medical techniques and healthcare beyond geographical borders. The aim of this study is to establish a broad-banded medical network between hospitals in Korea and Japan using Digital Video Transport System (DVTS) over Internet protocol. Method: We used Asia Pacific Internet Infrastructure (APII) and Kyushu GigaPOP (QGPOP) (Japanese side), the Korea Advanced REsearch Network (Korean side), and the Korea-Japan Cable Network (international line). We performed Korea-Japan medical teleconferences with bi-directional transmission of live surgery by DVTS streaming on IPv4 network. Results: The teleconference with surgical transmission with DVTS over Internet protocol was successfully performed. We could keep enough bandwidth of 30 Mbps for a line of transmission. The quality of the transmitted moving image had no frame loss with the rate of 30 per second. The sound was also clear and the time delay was less than 0.01 sec. Conclusion: We have established an international medical network with high-quality video transmission over Internet protocol, which is reliable and useful for education. This will be a promising tool in remote medicine for the two countries and for world wide telemedical communication in the future.
